Outstanding social care result for special school where students thrive

Students at Moor House School & College thrive in a safe, vibrant and inclusive environment, as detailed in an outstanding Social Care Inspection report.

Inspectors looked closely at the experience and progress of children and young people and found that ‘a culture of high aspirations and equal opportunities mean that students have life-changing experiences.’

Based in Hurst Green, Oxted, Moor House is a co-educational, non-maintained residential and day special school.

It is one of very few schools in the country specialising in supporting children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), a hidden but common communication disorder that affects 1 in 14 people, causing difficulties understanding and using language for no known reason.

‘Students behave impeccably in the boarding house’ according to the report, and ‘through exceptional support and consistent care, staff have developed trusting relationships with them.’

The report also highlights:

  • Staff have an excellent understanding of students’ targets and areas of support
  • There is a strong-shared ethos of togetherness and respect
  • Leaders work with students, families, staff and other professionals effectively
  • Cohesive planning ensures positive outcomes for students
  • There is a robust well-being and mental health support system
  • Hearing the students' voices is a real strength of this service
  • Staff successfully help students to pursue further education placements and there is detailed planning for all students’ next steps
  • Staff benefit from a structured induction and development process, this inclusive and welcoming environment means that there is excellent staff retention, and students benefit greatly from the stability and permanence this brings
